Could 'eye awareness' be iSlate's killer app?

According to recombu.com the much anticipated and much rumoured Apple tablet, aka iTab, iSlate, etc., could get an eye control interface. Citing a patent application from a couple of years back, they speculate that this could be the 'sexy' new interface that some of the many rumours mention.

This seems plausible. Apple is not the kind of company to launch a product that doesn't stand out in the marketplace. A unit that's mostly for passive consumption of video and text, combined with knowledge of your eye's activity, seems a match made in heaven. The applications for this are many, but here's a couple that I just came up with off the top of my head (excluding the obvious control of the pointer/cursor):

  • Scrolling/page turning: Wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to press a key or drag your finger over the screen to scroll down or turn a page. The eye-aware tablet would know how far along you were, and could scroll or turn the page automatically, when it detected that you were focusing at the bottom of the screen.
  • Automatic font-size: If the tablet also knew how far away your eyes were it could adjust the size of the fonts to have them be at the optimal size at all times. From my own experience I like to switch reading positions while reading. With this function, the tablet could remain in it's place indepentent of the reader.
  • Automatic zoom: Often when browsing a news-site or mashup-site your looking at a collection of articles or pieces that are somehow collated together, like the front page of a newspaper. Knowing what you were reading the summary it could bring up the full article for you when you finished reading it and kept your focus there for a second.
  • Commercials/banners: Measuring the effect of online advertising is limited to whether or not you click the links or banners. You really don't know if the reader has seen your advertisement if he doesn't click on it. Well, with this you would know if and for how long it was looked at. I'm guessing it could be very valuable to advertiser and therefore also to the content provider.
  • Sleep detection: Ok, I'll throw this in as well, event though it's a bit of a strecth, but I think it would be cool if the tablet shut down if it detected that you weren't looking at it or closed your eyes for a while. Could save some battery time, at least when you're doing an all-nighter before an exam.
I have to disclose that I have no idea if these ideas are possible to implement with the current state of eye control tecnhology or not, but I guess that somewhere down the road it's certain that the possibilities will come, if this idea catches on.
One might say that you could easily do those things with the normal multitouch interface. Yes, if you had both hands available, one for holding and one for control. But a lot of times you only have one or none; while eating breakfast, standing or in a tight seat when commuting, on the phone, or holding someone's hand (aww...).
